Here’s a fascinating video from TED in March 07 where guest talker and prolific writer producer JJ Abrams gives us a glimpse into the concepts that inspire his work, and how he uses them effectively for narrative purposes. For fan’s who might be interested in the creative process he uses to engage viewers, his insights into the use of mystery and the element it provides in the narrative form is both simplistic and yet highly revealing.
Whilst the Lost finale aired the back in June, a significant part of the mystery was revealed, however there are questions that continue to be unanswered. Though as JJ illuminates that the mystery, within the mystery and the question the minds poses is part of the narrative device that truly excites him, and he fondly recounts the origins of his own ‘mystery box’, a keepsake from his childhood that continues to serve as inspiration to this day.
