As reported in a previous story, director Casey Affleck revealed how after the film I’m Still Here premiered that Joaquin’s outrageous antics were not part of his descent into some sort of celebrity hell, but a character performance art technique designed to create a significant illusion, which caught many industry insiders off guard.
Now more than a year later he’s returned to the David Letterman show – this time as himself and all has been revealed. Joaquin also took the opportunity to apologize and explain the purpose behind last years bizarre appearance.
Dave proclaimed and asked Joaquin to confirm how he wasn’t in on the gag – which many had suggested – and joked that he wants a million dollars for his contribution, we’ll have to wait and see if that was in jest, but he did seem like he wanted to get things off his chest and felt like a joke had been played on him.
Though Dave is a true pro and we can understand that Phoenix had his reasons for such character immersion which caught plenty of folks out – similar to Sacha Baron Cohen as Borat or Brüno performing scenes with unsuspecting participants who believe it’s part of some crazy doco.
